MPEP是可口服的mGlu5受体选择性拮抗剂，IC₅₀为36 nM，也是mGlu4受体的正向变构调节剂，但对其它I/II/III型代谢型谷氨酸受体没有作用，具有抗焦虑和抗抑郁活性。
