This gene is a member of the melanoma antigen gene (MAGE) family. Most of the genes of this family encode tumor specific antigens that are not expressed in normal adult tissues except testis. Although the protein encoded by this gene shares strong homology with members of the MAGE family, it is expressed in almost all normal adult tissues. This gene has been demonstrated to be involved in the p75 neurotrophin receptor mediated programmed cell death pathway. Three transcript variants encoding two different isoforms have been found for this gene.

Immunohistochemistry was performed on paraffin-embedded human glioblastoma using MAGED1 antibody . Antigen retrieval was done in sodium citrate buffer (pH 6.0). DAB was used for detection, with hematoxylin counterstaining. Images were acquired using a Nikon Ci-L Plus microscope (40× objective). Scale bar, 25 μm.

Western blotting analysis using MAGED1 antibody . MAGED1 expression in wild-type (WT) and MAGED1 shRNA knockdown (KD) HeLa cells with 20 μg of total cell lysates. Hsp90 α serves as a loading control. The blot was incubated with MAGED1 antibody and HRP-conjugated goat anti-mouse secondary antibody respectively. Image was developed using FeQ™ ECL Substrate Kit .
