IL-11 (Interleukin-11) is a cytokine that belongs to the interleukin family. It is primarily secreted by fibroblasts, macrophages, and certain types of lymphocytes. IL-11 plays an important role in various physiological and pathological processes, particularly in immune responses, inflammatory reactions, and tissue repair and regeneration.
IL-11 can influence the function of lymphocytes, promoting the proliferation and activation of certain immune cells. It is involved in both acute and chronic inflammatory processes and may contribute to the maintenance of pathological inflammation. After injury and surgery, IL-11 helps promote the proliferation of fibroblasts and collagen synthesis, facilitating tissue healing. IL-11 may have detrimental effects in certain diseases; for instance, in fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and some cancers, its overexpression could lead to pathological conditions.
Due to the role of IL-11 in various diseases, researchers are exploring therapeutic strategies targeting IL-11 to develop new drugs, particularly for the treatment of fibrosis and certain types of cancer.
