The protein encoded by this gene is a cysteine-aspartic acid protease that plays a central role in the execution-phase of cell apoptosis. The encoded protein cleaves and inactivates poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase while it cleaves and activates sterol regulatory element binding proteins as well as caspases 6, 7, and 9. This protein itself is processed by caspases 8, 9, and 10. It is the predominant caspase involved in the cleavage of amyloid-beta 4A precursor protein, which is associated with neuronal death in Alzheimer's disease.

Western blotting analysis using caspase 3 antibody . Total cell lysates (30 μg) from various cell lines were loaded and separated by SDS-PAGE. The blot was incubated with caspase 3 antibody and HRP-conjugated goat anti-rabbit secondary antibody respectively. Image was developed using FeQ™ ECL Substrate Kit .

Hsp90 α serves as a loading control. The blot was incubated with caspase 3 antibody (Cat #64941, 1:2,500) and HRP-conjugated goat anti-rabbit secondary antibody (Cat #201, 1:20,000) respectively. Image was developed using NaQ™ ECL Substrate Kit (Cat #716).
