Thrombomodulin (TM) is a transmembrane glycoprotein located on the
luminal surface of endothelial cells in most normal blood vessels that
regulates coagulation and inflammation .
Encoded by an intronless gene on chromosome 20, the mature single-chain
TM glycoprotein in the human is 557 amino acids long, structurally organized
into five distinct regions, including the cytoplasmic and transmembrane
domains, a serine/threonine-rich region with an attached chondroitin sulfate
moiety, six consecutive EGF-like repeats, and the N-terminal lectin-like
domain . Thrombomodulin is an endothelial cell thrombin receptor that converts
thrombin into an anticoagulant capable of activating protein C, suggesting a
protective role in thrombosis
