Abstract
Strain Wq-1 significantly suppresses Psa infection in branch assays. • Genomic analysis of Wq-1 identifies specific antimicrobial gene clusters. • Heterologous expression confirms Laterosporulin 1 as a key anti-Psa effector. Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) severely threatens the kiwifruit industry. This study evaluated the biocontrol efficacy of Brevibacillus laterosporus Wq-1 against Psa using a kiwifruit branch assay. Strain Wq-1 exhibited preventative effects, achieving an 89.66% control rate, and showed no phytotoxicity. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) revealed a safe genomic profile lacking known plant pathogenic genes and identified a complete Laterosporulin biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC), suggesting its role in Wq-1′s antagonistic activity. This bacteriocin was designated Laterosporulin 1. The core region of the Laterosporulin 1 BGC was expressed in Pichia pastoris X33. Purified recombinant Laterosporulin 1 inhibited Psa in vitro, confirming its antagonistic role. These results indicate that strain Wq-1, with its multi-faceted mechanisms, represents a promising biocontrol agent for kiwifruit canker.
